Why Do I Need to Complete an LLND Self-Assessment?

The 2025 Outcome Standards for RTOs legally require all Registered Training Organisations to assess students’ language, literacy, numeracy, and digital (LLND) skills before enrolment.

This is a legislative requirement that applies to all Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) across Australia, it is not an ATOL-specific rule.

Under the 2025 Outcome Standards for RTOs – Standard 2.2, ATOL is required to review your skills and competencies before enrolment and advise you whether the training product is suitable for you. To meet this requirement, we use a short LLND self-assessment (plus follow-up if needed) as part of our review.

2025 Outcome Standards, Standard 2.2 Outcome Standards (1) VET students are advised, prior to enrolment, about the suitability of the training product for them, taking into account the student’s skills and competencies. Performance Indicators (2) An NVR registered training organisation demonstrates: (a) taking into account the requirements of the training product – it has procedures in place to review, prior to enrolment, the skills and competencies of prospective VET students, including their language, literacy and numeracy proficiency and digital literacy; and (b) based upon the outcome of the review – it provides advice to each prospective VET student about whether the training product is suitable for them.

What to do:

  1. Complete the LLND self-assessment.

  2. Download or save your report (PDF).

  3. Upload the report to the ATOL student portal to initiate your enrolment review.

What happens next:

  • We review your LLND results (and any follow-up) and advise you on the suitability of the training product.

  • If you clearly meet the skills and competencies for the course, you’ll proceed to enrolment.

  • If not fully met, our team may contact you for a brief interview and discuss support options or alternate pathways.

  • ATOL may not be able to provide specialised LLND support in some areas; where appropriate, we’ll recommend other courses or upskilling pathways.

Important to note:
ATOL is not able to provide specialised LLND support in some areas. In these cases, we may determine that this training or career pathway is not the right fit for you at this time. Where possible, we will recommend alternate courses and/or upskilling pathways in line with our responsibilities as an RTO.
