What is a Credit Transfer?

Australian Nationally Recognised Competencies

Credit transfer is the recognition of learning achieved through formal education and training.

Under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations, ATOL accepts and provides credit to learners for equivalent units of competency (unless licensing or regulatory requirements prevent this) where these are evidenced by:

  • AQF certification documentation issued by any other RTO or AQF authorised issuing organisation; or
  • authenticated VET transcripts issued by the Registrar.

Credit transfer allows the unit of competency previously achieved by a participant to be recognised when they are enrolling in a related course where those units can assist them in meeting the requirements for a qualification.

It is a requirement of Clause 3.5 Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 that Auditor Training Online authenticates the information by directly accessing the USI transcript online or by contacting the organisation that issued the document to confirm the content is valid.

Auditor Training Online is not obliged to issue a qualification or statement of attainment that is achieved wholly through recognition of units and/ or modules completed at another RTO or RTOs.

It is important to note that credit transfer is not Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and cannot be guaranteed for a full qualification. RPL is an assessment-only pathway of determining the competence of a person, while providing credit-transfer is recognising the equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications previously undertaken and completed successfully.

Refer to our article on Skills Recognition for a full list of eligible competency units.

NOTE: Where a competency unit is not identical to or noted as ‘equivalent to’ on training.gov.au, students will be required to apply for RPL or enrol in the full equivalent course. Credit transfer is only available on identical or equivalent competency unit identifiers.
