How do I create a career for myself as an auditor?

Auditing is a great way to turn your experiences into a qualification and career

Like any goal, you have to have a plan. Plans are made up of a series of steps. We know what the steps are and will help you achieve them. Let's go through these steps and show you how you get a job as an auditor.

You should start by watching this video from our Director Jackie, who is a practicing, triple-certified auditor. She's been auditing management systems for over 20 years, so she knows how the industry works, and the good thing is she wants to share this with you. This video has great information for everyone, regardless if you are looking to do external or internal auditing.

Below is a summary of the video, plus other great information:

  1. Get Qualified - Select a training package from our website, starting on the courses page, to get your qualification. Regardless if you are a new or experienced auditor, there will be a course to meet your goals. Most of our courses do not require any prerequisites.
  2. Resumé -  Include terms such as 'Lead Auditor', 'Internal Auditor' depending on what qualification you have done with us. Also, include terms to reflect what competencies you have studied. So if you did a course on Quality Management Systems include 'Quality Management Systems' and 'ISO 9001' in your resumé. Apart from making your qualifications clear if you resumé is searched electronically on key terms, it will be returned in the search.
  3. Make your experience clear - Look at your resume and ensure that your industry experience is clear. Certified Accreditation Bodies (CABs) are interested in which Industry gaps they can fill. So, if they have a lot of auditors already with experience in manufacturing and then someone comes along with different sector experience it broadens their scope of customers also. For your resumé add specific industries to each section of work experience. Some CABs use ANZSIC codes to categorize clients and also verify competency with auditors. You could align these industries with ANZSIC codes so it's less work for CABs to see where you fit in. You can see the full list here, but be warned there is a LOT! Maybe just reference the higher level divisions, like Division A Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing and Division B Mining and so on.

  4. JAS-ANZ database search - If you are looking for work as an external auditor then use this link, Accredited Bodies Search, to access the JAS-ANZ website to start looking for the Certified Accreditation Bodies (CABs) you think would suit your qualifications and experience (it doesn't have to be just one). Contact the CAB and discuss your unique skills and experience and find out if they match what they are currently looking for in their external auditors. Don't be afraid to ask them questions to help you understand what your pathway might be.
  5. Use your mentor - Be guided and mentored by Jackie, our Director and Lead Auditor in Quality\Safety\Environment, through the ELP program. Surround yourself with successful people, and you will be successful.
  6. Exemplar Global personnel certification - Through this international personnel certification body, you can get professional recognition, network, and continue your professional development.  If you received a qualification with us that includes their ELP program then make the most of it.
  7. The Auditor Training Online Community - Look under the 'Student Hub' tab in your student portal to see all the ways you can be involved in our community. Continue to learn and network.
  8. Living it - It doesn't matter how far along your journey to becoming an auditor you are you should already be starting to think like an auditor. Think about when you have been involved with implementing or improving processes and\or making sure staff or team members have been following a process. You have probably already been 'auditing' without knowing you were doing it. It all starts with your mindset.
  9. Networking - Establish your own network for success.
    1. Join Exemplar Global's Linkedin page for networking opportunities.
    2. Join local business groups and start connecting with other professionals and businesses. These groups may be face-to-face and\or online.
